The Siberian is different from most other kitties which produce a protein, FEL, D1, which is in their saliva and then transfers to their fur when they clean themselves. This is an exquisite allergen for some sensitive individuals, meaning that contact with a kitty results in streaming eyes, sneezing, and general discomfort on the human side of the relationship. The Siberian breed produces very level of FEL, D1, which in turn means that about 80% of the persons who are allergic to kitties are NOT allergic to Siberians.
MEET THE HUGHES
The mom is janice; the dad is Jim. I (janice) have had many pets over the past 40 years. These ranged from wild creatures rescued, as well as nursing homeless, defenseless babies, e.g., even an opossum which I returned back to a sanctuary. I have had in my classroom when I was a teacher or currently have, gerbels, other rodents, aquatic fish, turtles, and even Jake-the-Snake who lives in our flowers and bushes. Jim and I have two talking parrots, Lucy and Magnum..... Magnum talks in two voices and sings arias (opera). Besides the Siberians, we have had Himalayans, Persians, a Ragdoll, and currently RagaMuffins, www.jajaragamuffins.com.
All of these wonderful pedigreed kitties we have come to learn about and understand.
For 20 years, I was in Bearded Collies... in the beginning when they were a rare breed and first appeared in the US.... and have showed at AKC shows all over the country...Prestigious Westminster every year, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, all states except Hawaii and Alaska... having owner-handled over 100 AKC champions (many were Canadian champions as well). Later I began on the ground floor with the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, also a rare breed from Poland. Obviously my heart has been in rare breeds all along. It is just a thrill to watch the breed captivate a following and develop into a most desirable pedigree breed for families.
We decided to purchase a beautiful Siberian (Leda) from Russia after much research online and googling the world wide web. Leda, our first Siberian, is from the famous Dauria line. With more research we found Jenny Carter from England and imported Erek, now a Grand Champion and #1 USA Siberian for 2006-07 and 2007-08 (ACFA & UFO) and then in January 2008, Gracie, Hector and Chita.... www.inspirationcats.co.uk/
Ja Ja Siberians and RagaMuffins
We are a registered cageless cattery where kittens are reared underfoot -- protected while babies and growing. When mature enough they have the run of the house and can go inside or outside on our huge lanai. We live on the water. They love to watch the water fowl, ducks, birds, anoles, chameleons, etc., they just love feeling the warm breezes and smelling the fresh balmy air. I attribute the healthiness of Ja Ja Kittens/kitties to being free to move here and there having fresh air... no caging , no solitary confinements of any kind...no garage or separate special room in the house for Ja Ja!
Ja Ja Siberians
My! My! My! Siberians are such fun and so human-like (little reincarnates...LOL) that one Siberian is never enough. They are addictive.
Siberians are sprightly, active, and extremely agile, so much so that they can leap great distances and heights to 'fly' through the air with the greatest of ease! Trapeze artists, for sure! Amazingly, they usually navigate potentially breakable bric-a-brac, ornaments, vases, etc., without leaving a path of destruction in their wake. However, prudence dictates that one would not want to have valuables about (curios, shelving, and china cabinets are a must)! As you visualize a blend of the circus dare-devil, flying Wallendas and the sleuth 'the Pink Panther,' you can understand that the Siberian is a wild mixture of both. Expect the unexpected when living with sometimes zany Siberians.
Siberians are powerful, intense, human-like kitties....they do not bite and are not combative with other kitties. They are huge talkers and 'chirpers' with a very, very loud purr. Felichita actually gives real kisses....
History
The Siberian kittycat originated in Russia, it is believed more than a 1000 years ago, and came to the USA in 1994. They are dependent upon human interaction and tend to blond closer than other feline breeds. This also creates a situation that provides for easier training. Siberians are powerful kitties, but rarely injure their human friends, even in play. They purr very loudly and love to head butt their favorite humans. They are not very vocal but quickly establish communications through body language. They purr, meow, and chirp. Because of the obvious reasons above and the many amazing others, the Siberians are rapidly becoming the pet of choice for many families. Jim and I love our feline family as though they were our 'kids.' Because of the overwhelming customer satisfaction, we thoroughly enjoy working with prospective adoption individuals. What is a Siberian Kitty?
Siberians are a rare breed, a Russian forest kitty, native to the Taiga, the largest natural forest remaining on earth and a place where the climate fluctuates to extremes. The Siberian, a natural breed, is Russia's national cat. During the summer, in the Taiga temperatures can top 100 degrees and in the winter may reach 80 degrees below zero.
For a kitty to survive in these climatic conditions the Siberian evolved into a well-developed and muscular breed, with a medium-long low-maintenance coat requiring little or no grooming. In the winter the Siberian's triple-layer water-resistant fur is full and dense, but will shed somewhat in the summer. Most of these kitties shed very little throughout the year. Living in such harsh conditions has produced a very healthy cat with few known health problems.
(Living in Florida below the freeze line, my Siberians never attain a true winter-type coat).
Hypoallergenic
Long-time breeders began noticing that when people visited the home, those known to have cat allergies could tolerate the Siberian. Some Siberian breeders believe that the breed may have reduced cat allergens called FEL D1, which is an extremely potent allergen. It is an exquisite allergen for some sensitive individuals, meaning that contact with a kitty results in streaming eyes, sneezing and general unhappiness on the human side of the relationship. Secretions from the glands of the skin are the primary source of FEL D1, but it is also deposited on the fur through the saliva when the animal cleans itself. Eventually the allergen flakes off and becomes airborne to trigger the allergy symptoms.
Through years of experience, it was found that Siberians can be adopted by people who have never been able to tolerate - much less own - a cat before!! This is because the Siberian breed is different from most other kitties, in that it produces very low levels of FEL D1, which in turn means that about 80% of the people who are allergic to other kitties are NOT allergic to Siberians.
We are a cageless cattery where kittens are reared underfoot – protected while they are babies and growing. When they are mature enough they have the run of the house and can go in and out (we have a huge enclosed lanai) and we live on the water.
The kitties love to watch the water fowl, ducks, birds, anoles, chameleons, etc.. they just love feeling the warm breezes and smelling the fresh air. We attribute the healthiness of our Ja Ja kitties to being free to move here and there and have plenty of fresh air… no caging in solitary confinement… no separate special room in the house for us!!!!
